Used for only 20 minutes a day, the AcceleDent device is painless and can be used to complement another orthodontic treatment. Dr. Paul Hwang is pleased to offer the AcceleDent device to his Sylvania and Swanton patients for faster and superior orthodontic results.

How Does AcceleDent Work?

AcceleDent is an FDA-approved medical device that uses patented SoftPulse Technology® to send micropulses to the roots of the teeth and surrounding bone. The gentle vibrations promote cellular activity and stimulate blood flow, which in turn speeds up the rate at which the teeth move.

AcceleDent device to move teeth faster in SylvaniaAcceleDent is easy to use. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and bite down  on it, making sure all sides of the mouth are in contact with the device. Next, plug the mouthpiece into the activator and turn the device on. Without holding onto it with your hands, keep the mouthpiece in place for 20 minutes. Feel free to multitask while the device is working; you can watch TV, read your emails or send a text during treatment. If you need to pause, the device can pause six times during each session for up to five minutes at a time.

Once the 20 minutes is up, turn off the device and remove it from your mouth. The mouthpiece should be cleaned after each session, using lukewarm water. Occasionally, you can use mild soap or toothpaste to gently brush the mouthpiece. Let the mouthpiece air dry or wipe it using a soft cloth before placing it into its case.

Clinical studies have found that when used with traditional braces or clear aligners, AcceleDent can speed up tooth movement by as much as 50 percent while reducing discomfort associated with braces and aligners by up to 71 percent. AcceleDent is comfortable to use. The micropulses used to trigger tooth movement exert up to eight times less force than an electric toothbrush. In some cases, AcceleDent can reduce the number of orthodontic office visits required.

AcceleDent FAQs

How much faster will my orthodontic treatment be with AcceleDent?

Various studies have demonstrated the benefit of AcceleDent in shortening the duration of your orthodontic treatment. During the initial phase, tooth movement increases by as much as 106 percent, and continues to show a 50 percent improvement in later phases. The result is that your treatment may be shortened by five months or more, depending on the type of orthodontic correction required for your teeth.

Has the safety of AcceleDent been proven?

AcceleDent is an FDA-cleared Class II medical device that has been used around the world for more than a decade. In U.S. clinical trials, AcceleDent was shown to have no negative side effects, including no increase in root resorption and no difference in loss of posterior anchorage.

What is SoftPulse technology?

SoftPulse technology is AcceleDent’s proprietary system for “remodeling” the bones that anchor the roots of your teeth, allowing for quicker movement and realignment. The gentle vibrations, or micropulses, generated by the AcceleDent device reduce bone resistance to movement of your teeth, shortening treatment time and reducing the amount of internal tension in your jaw.

Is AcceleDent compatible with any kind of orthodontic appliance?

The device works in conjunction with most types of braces on the market today. Dr. Hwang can help you determine if AcceleDent is an appropriate option for the orthodontic appliance you will be using to straighten your teeth.

Can I use AcceleDent for more or less than 20 minutes per day?

Dr. Hwang recommends daily use of AcceleDent for 20 minutes per session. There is no additional benefit to using the device more than 20 minutes, but using it for less time may slow your progress.

Is use of AcceleDent painful?

No, the micropulses generated by the AcceleDent device cause no discomfort at all. And because AcceleDent clears the way for smooth movement of your teeth, your teeth are actually less likely to hurt after an adjustment than with orthodontic treatment without AcceleDent.

Why is it important to bite into the mouthpiece with the proper amount of force?

To work effectively, the AcceleDent device must be held in place by at least two points of contact in your mouth. This allows the micropulses to travel efficiently throughout your jaw, reducing bone resistance to the pressure applied by your braces. It is recommended that you bite into the mouthpiece with just enough pressure to hold it in place without use of your hands.

Is AcceleDent covered by my dental insurance, or an eligible expense for a Health Savings Account (HSA)?

As part of the orthodontic treatment prescribed by Dr. Hwang, AcceleDent may be partially covered by your dental insurance if your plan includes orthodontic services. Our office is happy to confirm your coverage with your dental insurance carrier. AcceleDent is typically an approved expenditure under an HSA, but you may want to confirm this with your plan administrator.
